During his past as a criminal before his career as a Shinigami where he lived in the 80th District North of the Rukongai,Zaraki, he met a young girl with pink hair from Kusajishi, the 79th District North, and decided to name herYachirubecause of the woman he admires and respects above all else.Yachiruwould become his faithful partner throughout the story, even becoming his Vice-Captain once he became Captain.

During his childhood, he was already an exceptional swordsman and slaughtered all life until his meeting with the 1st Captain of the 11th Division and likewise the first Kenpachi,Yachiru Unohana. Having matched her, he set himself the goal of surpassing her. After defeatingKenpachi Kiganjô, he becomes the Eleventh Shinigami to have this title of exceptional fighter.

His reputation as a bloodthirsty warrior makes him despicable toByakuya Kuchiki and Kaname Tōsen and on the contrary respected byIkkaku Madarame and Yumichika Ayasegawa as well as feared by Yoruichi Shihōin. His combat power would moreover be the key factor in the war against the Quincy.
