Teach was a former member of the second division of Whitebeard 's crew, led by Portgas D. Ace . He killed Thatch , commander of the fourth division, to seize the Yami Yami no Mi . He temporarily became one of the 7 Warlords after defeating Ace and handing him over to the Navy, but he decided to abandon his title after he and his crew killed Whitebeard during the siege of Marineford.

He is one of the main antagonists of One Piece and the only known person to have absorbed two different Demon Fruits. He is the second antagonist of the Jaya arc after Bellamy . He is the third antagonist of the Impel Down arc after Magellan and Hannyabal . He is the third antagonist of the Marineford arc after Sengoku and Sakazuki .
