During his past as a criminal before his career as a Shinigami where he lived in the 80th District North of Rukongai,Zaraki, he met a young girl with pink hair from Kusajishi, the 79th District North, and decided to name herYachirubecause of the woman he admires and respects above all else.Yachiruwill furthermore become his faithful partner throughout the story, eventually becoming his Vice-Captain once she became Captain.
During his childhood, he was already an exceptional swordsman and massacred all life until his encounter with the 1st Captain of the 11th Division and at the same time the first kenpachi,Yachiru Unohana. Having held his own against her, he will set himself the goal of surpassing her. After defeatingKenpachi Kiganjô, he becomes the Eleventh Shinigami to have this title of exceptional fighter.
His reputation as bloodthirsty makes him despicable toByakuya Kuchiki and Kaname Tōsen and on the contrary respected byIkkaku Madarame and Yumichika Ayasegawa as well as feared by Yoruichi Shihōin. His combat power will moreover be the key factor in the war against the Quincy.
