⛩ The eclipse (literally "occultation"), also known as the occultation ceremony, is a rare sacrificial ceremony that occurs once every 216 years, during which a new member of the God Hand must be born.
Griffith's occultation is mentioned in a prophecy of the Holy See which states that the appearance of a red lake when the sun "dies five times" announces the birth of an angel signaling the beginning of a "age of darkness". In a fierce battle with Guts and Griffith, Zodd recognizes the importance of Griffith after noticing the young man's Crimson Beherit and spares him thus.
The Eclipse occurs one year after Griffith is saved by the Band of the Hawk from his paralyzing imprisonment in the Tower of Rebirth. On the eve of the occultation, the apostles go on pilgrimage to the predetermined location of the event while killing part of the Band of the Hawk along the way.
After reaching a point of despair so great that he attempted suicide, Griffith activates his Crimson Beherit after Guts commits what Griffith considers at this moment to be the unforgivable act of touching him.
