Unfortunately, these masks harmed his students because they were the "marker" for the Demon Hand to find Sakonji's students whom he wanted to take revenge on.
Thus thirteen of Sakonji's disciples were killed this way. This type of mask is also worn by the blacksmiths of the Blacksmith Village which are all shaped like jesters.
